Artists We Love :: Brion Gysin

Like David Bowie, Keith Haring, and John Giorno? Wondering what these guys have in common? They were all heavily inspired by interdisciplinary artist Brion Gysin, a man whom William S. Burroughs once called “the only man I ever respected.”

A pioneer of the Cut-Up Method which his friend and contemporary Burroughs made famous, Gysin worked with the written word, visual arts, and aural experimentations, constantly pushing boundaries and bending the “rules” of art. He also created the Dreamachine, a flicker device designed to induce visions and inspire the mind.

Gysin’s work in various mediums will be displayed at the New Museum in the first ever survey of his work in the US, from July 7th to October 3rd.  The exhibition, entitled Brion Gysin: Dream Machine, will include drawings, books, paintings, films, collages, and sound work– even the Dreamachine itself will be there. -Mac Smullen
