Emily Henochowicz is a 21 year-old art student from NY’s Cooper Union who was shot in the face with a tear gas canister by an Israeli soldier and has subsequently lost her eye. She was among the thousands protesting Israel’s attack on the humanitarian flotilla this past weekend throughout the West Bank. I read her story last night and it deeply saddened me. I thought of her courage and the courage of countless others who stand up for basic human rights around the world. I thought of the many civilian kids and families who are affected by unnecessary violence not only in Gaza but in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and countless other countries. I thought of Emily’s immense courage, boundless empathy and steadfast commitment to protest one of the many ills that surround us.
Today, I wanted to know more about Emily and I found her blog, her drawings and watercolors. I found her sense of humor and observant spirit, her short films and animations. I found a young woman who dared to speak up and protest in one of the most violent and dangerous places in the world and yet her artwork is gentle, thoughtful and hopeful.
I haven’t been able to stop crying over this and the senseless waste and pain of war and conflict. There are countless others with similar stories who we don’t hear about. This is an example of just one.
Please take a look at Emily’s animation below, Walkers, and take time to see more of her work on her blog: ThirstyPixels.blogspot and more of her videos on her Youtube channel. We thank you for all the inspiration and we wish you a speedy and safe recovery. – Moni Pineda
