Clubnights We Love :: Joe Cuba Release + Chico Mann + Bobbito

This is an evening of music not to be missed! Our good friends at Wax Poetics are re-releasing Fania’s Joe Cuba, “El Alcalde del Barrio – The Architect of the Nuyorican Sound” and throwing a big party to celebrate. They’ve pulled all the stops on this one with live performances by the great Chico Mann, The Boogaloo Assassins and DJ sets by Bobbito Garcia & Turmix.

Tkat, who plays with Chico Mann, is  telling us more about how this special evening is going down: “Wax Poetics and Fania had the idea of turning over a wealth of Joe Cuba tunes to Chico Mann to see what we could do with it.  The result is a pushing forward of urban (as in NY/NJ) Latin music in the same spirit that Joe Cuba so effectively began in the 60s.  We began by choosing Joe Cuba coros, loops, samples, and snippets to recontextualize and flip in a Chico style.  The live ensemble (me as El Gato, Caito Sanchez as El Gallo, and Marcos Garcia as the one and only Chico) got together and integrated and arranged all the ingredients to our Joe Cuba stew to see what we could cook up as a tribute to and celebration of the man’s undeniable impact on modern Latin music.  And all I’m saying is… It’s got flavor!”
