One of our favorite rooms at MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibit was the replica of Rammellzee’s Tribeca loft. It encompasses many facets of his Gothic Futurist theory. In case you aren’t able to experience this first hand, check out this short MOCA recently released. RIP.

Artists We Love :: Lizzi Akana

I stumbled upon animator, Lizzi Akana on the Animation Block Party website, and she immediately captured my attention. Her short film, Marvelous, Keen Loony Bin is one of the craziest animated shorts I’ve seen in a while. She directed and animated it as her thesis film while attending RISD. The film is filled with insanely imaginative creatures and objects that epitomize the reason I love animation. Lizzi Akana is an up-and-coming animator, but she’s definitely someone I’d keep my eye on.

The Cleveland, Ohio native was most famous for his autobiographical comic book series, American Splendor, which was often illustrated by friends and fellow comic book legends, such as Robert Crumb and Alan Moore. Harvey Pekar’s writing was loved by fans for its humorous look at the dull and raw sense of reality.

Artist and animator Henry McCausland isn’t letting the digital age take over quite yet. McCausland’s drawings and paintings translate beautifully into his excitingly fresh take on hand-drawn animation.
