Artists We Love :: Will Varner

Blending the anxiety of American culture and childhood fantasy, Will Varner’s illustrations take you into a somewhat welcoming world of isolation and outsiders. With a haunting but humorous comic book aesthetic, Will Varner boldly explores the fears and troubles of society that keep us all wondering what might happen next.
Artists We Love :: Shepard Fairey’s Mural in NYC

Mid afternoon on Tuesday, April 20, as we sat in our studio working on our laptops, we saw that @obeygiant was starting a mural on the “Haring” wall on Houston & Bowery. We were wondering what would go up next since we’d seen the wall painted white a couple of days before. (The good thing is that Os Gemeos is still there. This wall is actually a much bigger wall built on top of the concrete “Haring” wall.)
Needless to say we quickly got on our bikes, took our camera set off to check out the work in progress. It’s not every day that you see a mural of this size executed and I must say it was well worth it. Here’s some pics from the day & look out for a video coming soon.
artists we love :: rafaël rozendaal

With video art well entrenched and accepted in the art world, some artists have been exploring the web as a viable and interactive canvas for their art. Berlin-based Rafaël Rozendaal is one of these artists. Take a look at his graphic, at times colorful & moving pieces. Don’t forget to participate, click & move your cursor around for effects!
artists we love :: sherisa vassel, l’elephant rose

Synchronicity is a wonderful thing especially when it leads you to discover an artist and their work. That’s pretty much how I came across Sherisa Vassel who designs & creates all the jewelery and accessories on her site L’Elephant Rose. She designs and hand makes all the wonderful little treats. Here’s a bit more about Sherisa & her vision…
artists we love :: lucille reyboz, photographer

I had the pleasure of meeting Lucille about five years ago through a dear friend and we hit it off instantly. At the time she had just finished a book on the Batammaba tribe from Togo. Their name means “the true architects of the earth” and rightly so. She was able to capture their beautiful practice of building from natural materials with community hands as tools. Their architecture is not only striking but practical. She told me how the chief had welcomed her and ceremoniously “adopted” her into their village, which didn’t surprise me at all. Lucille is able to instantly connect through her honesty and kindness, put people at ease and inspire them all in one conversation. She has since found the funding to build a children’s school for the Batammaba that celebrates their true artistry and local traditions.
The project that followed for Lucille was a series of women at onsen (Japanese natural hot springs) for a solo show in NY’s Phillips de Pury. She asked me to create a soundscape for it and to DJ the opening which was a real treat for me. Lucille creates magic and this exhibit was a clear indication of her powers. Needless to say, the photos were gorgeous, the traditional tea ceremony and dinner she organized were sublime. I knew that I had to experience an onsen soon.
