Exhibits We Love :: Tara McPherson & Xiaoqing Ding @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The Jonathan LeVine Gallery is presenting two wonderful artists this month whom FWL has had the pleasure of filming for our Off the Wall collaborative series with Babelgum, Tara McPherson & Xiaoqing Ding. Both artists draw inspiration from a myriad of world mythologies, legends and folklore enriching each painting with a vibrant narrative for the viewer to explore. Watch our studio visit with Tara McPherson to hear her explain a couple of the stories behind her paintings & look out for our upcoming short with Xiaoqing Ding. – Moni Pineda

Events We Love :: Celebrate Brooklyn

Celebrate Brooklyn! is one of New York City’s longest running, free, outdoor performing arts festivals. Launched in 1979 as a catalyst for a Brooklyn performing arts scene and to bring people back into Prospect Park after years of neglect, Celebrate Brooklyn! has been an anchor in the park’s revitalization and has become one of the city’s foremost summer cultural attractions. Over its history, Celebrate Brooklyn! has presented over 1,700 artists and ensembles reflective of the borough’s diversity, ranging from internationally acclaimed performers to emerging, cutting-edge artists. All Celebrate Brooklyn! performances are free! The festival attracts upwards of 250,000 attendees from across New York City to the Prospect Park Bandshell each summer. Celebrate Brooklyn! has a well developed membership program with over 500 seasonal members. Benefits of membership include express entry, reserved seating, pre-concert receptions and more.

Videos We Love :: Pedestrian Gallery

Back in 2006, when I was still in high school, I co-directed my very first documentary, Pedestrian Gallery. In the process of making the short film, we got to interview some of the coolest graffiti artists of all time: Lady Pink, Swoon, Smith, and the list goes on. Definitely one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. I figured since it highlights some really cool artists, I’d pull it out from the depths of the internet and share it with world. You can check it out here, along with some other cool short films made that same summer

Our friend Aakash Nihalani will be presenting some new works at the Re-Creation II exhibit opening this Friday evening. This will be the first time the east coast will get to see it as it was first shown a few months back at the Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles. Needless to say there will be other great artists exhibiting so please don’t forget to RSVP.

Artists We Love :: Yuri Shimojo

Artists We Love :: Yuri Shimojo

One of the many aspects I love about my job is meeting new artists and being introduced to their work and creative process. Although I’ve seen the Barnstormers videos for a few years, it was only recently that I met Yuri Shimojo and her beautiful artwork. There is a playfulness and sensuality in her watercolors that are at times surreal and whimsical. Please take some time to explore her site & her work, especially the “stories” section which are really painted journal entries. Her sense of humor is sweet and her composition draws quite from her Japanese upbringing. I hope you enjoy her work as much as I did.

Exhibits We Love :: Free Emporium & Gift Exchange

Free Emporium & Gift Exchange is a new exhibit by artists Athena Robles & Anna Stein of Double A Projects especially designed for the Cuchifritos space in perfect timing for the holiday season. At this interactive exhibit you can bring unused gifts and exchange them for other unused gifts, take a look at original works of art and give your response to the whole experience. It is a “franchise” of the Global Free Store and continues the work of Double A Projects to examine alternative systems of support.
