Street Art We Love :: Banksy vs Robbo

When we saw these photos & read the article in the Wall Street Journal (out of all places) we couldn’t help but wonder what’s really behind all this. We came up with a few scenarios and the one that we’d like to believe is as follows. Given Banksy superstar status, why would he so blatantly write over a Robbo tag that’s a reigning piece from an era? Is this Banksy’s way of pulling a legend out of a 16yr retirement? Is this a way for Banksy to shed light on a writer who was the first London “all-city” bomber but who has never sold a “piece” in his career? We’re giving Banksy the benefit of the doubt because it wouldn’t make much sense otherwise. The article has a great slideshow featuring the photos below and deserves a closer look.

The Sunday Times recently posted an article about Banksy’s views on street art, family, and his decision to step away from big art shows. Included in the cover article was a new street piece by Banksy of a headphone wearing little monkey ready to slate a scene on his clapboard. As a rare treat the artist also provided a short video of himself creating the Sunday Times cover art. A nice little snippet of Banksy getting busy…

I don’t remember another case when I said “are you fucking kidding me” so many times in such a short span of time. Hats off to you Bansky for making life imitate art…

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has been brought together with graffiti artist Banksy for the video for his new solo song ‘The Hollow Earth’. The film was directed by US filmmaker Raymond Salvatore Harmon and features images of Banksy’s graffiti work. Meanwhile ‘The Hollow Earth’, along with its fellow double A-side ‘Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses’, is available as a free download from the members’ area of Radiohead.com.

Banksy was paid the princely sum of £1 by Bristol City Council for staging his massively popular exhibition at the City Museum and Art Gallery.
