Music We Love :: Sotu the Traveller, Left

Music We Love :: Sotu the Traveller, Left

[Left artwork cover] If you don’t know about Sotu the Traveller, you should. Sotu is a Dutch producer of Turkish descent living in Amsterdam who has been making some sick beats for years now. I got to know him through a mutual friend while I was looking for tracks to license for my Friends We Love CD for Toy’s Factory in Japan. Surely, I loved his collabo with singer Aischa, What’s Going On, which made it on the album.

This week Sotu is releasing Left, his second solo project of deeply moody, bassy and electro-ridden instrumentals that feel like an introspective soundtrack of the future now. We’re including the beautiful video for Hourglass by Judith Veenendaal below and samples of the whole album which you can also purchase. – Moni Pineda

Music We Love :: Bobbito Garcia’s Alala Records

Music We Love :: Bobbito Garcia's Alala Records

We couldn’t be more excited when Bobbito told us he was starting a label again – a 7″ label at that! Then we were sent the first single by Yosaku, “Malembe”, with none other than the man himself on the mic rocking all the Latin countries by name. We were already impressed, but then we heard that he’s got Mark de Clive Lowe on another 7″ release with Lady Alma’s tribute to Michael & Stevie, “I Can’t Help It” and Rahel’s Hope coming out TODAY!

As a way to promote the debut of his new label & all this great music, Bobbito will be spinning at a couple of in-stores this week: Today, 4/27 at Fat Beats (6th Ave. bet. 8th/9th St. 2nd Flr.) at 7pm and on Thursday 2/29 at Academy Records (12th St. bet. 1st Ave./Ave. A) on 4/29 at 6pm. This is a rare treat to hear Bob live at two great record stores, so don’t miss it!

Films We Love :: Stussy x J. Dilla Documentary

Films We Love :: Stussy x J. Dilla Documentary

Hats way off to the Stussy crew for putting together such a heartfelt documentary on one of hip-hop’s unsung heroes- J. Dilla. Straight no-nonsense storytelling by the select few that inhibited Dilla’s innerspace during his years on the come up. A real treat for the hardcore fans as well as wonderful entry point to those ready to go on a Dilla voyage.

Stop Motion We Love :: Grindin’

Stop Motion We Love :: Grindin'

If you’re anything like us, you love getting treats rather than spam & work emails in your inbox. A couple of days ago we were pleasantly surprised to find this absolutely mad stop motion treat created with wooden blocks and 4085 photos. This is the work of Rogier van der Zwaag for his group Nobody Beats the Drum and we were blown away. Our first thought was that Rogier’s a bit mental but definitely brilliant. We’re posting Grindin’ and the making of, which is actually a good laugh. Thanks for sharing your beautiful madness, Rogier. WE LOVE IT!
