Music We Love :: Bobbito Garcia’s Alala Records
We couldn’t be more excited when Bobbito told us he was starting a label again – a 7″ label at that! Then we were sent the first single by Yosaku, “Malembe”, with none other than the man himself on the mic rocking all the Latin countries by name. We were already impressed, but then we heard that he’s got Mark de Clive Lowe on another 7″ release with Lady Alma’s tribute to Michael & Stevie, “I Can’t Help It” and Rahel’s Hope coming out TODAY!
As a way to promote the debut of his new label & all this great music, Bobbito will be spinning at a couple of in-stores this week: Today, 4/27 at Fat Beats (6th Ave. bet. 8th/9th St. 2nd Flr.) at 7pm and on Thursday 2/29 at Academy Records (12th St. bet. 1st Ave./Ave. A) on 4/29 at 6pm. This is a rare treat to hear Bob live at two great record stores, so don’t miss it!
Music We Love :: Blitz The Ambassador – Remembering The Future (Live w/ 12 Piece Band)
When Bobbito says “I have to play you something” – You listen. We flipped open a laptop, pulled up YouTube and quickly typed Blitz The Ambassador. Clubnights We Love :: Joe Cuba Release + Chico Mann + Bobbito
This is an evening of music not to be missed! Our good friends at Wax Poetics are re-releasing Fania’s Joe Cuba, “El Alcalde del Barrio – The Architect of the Nuyorican Sound” and throwing a big party to celebrate. They’ve pulled all the stops on this one with live performances by the great Chico Mann, The Boogaloo Assassins and DJ sets by Bobbito Garcia & Turmix.

“Downtown Calling” documents the New York City of the late 70s and early 80s that we love & often romanticize. The New York that gave birth to the music, art, fashion, attitude and overall aesthetic that still influences our lives today. Our friend Shan Nicolson serves as director/producer, Ben Velez also produces & none other than Deborah Harry narrates. There’s interviews with a host of downtown characters and culturati including Fab 5 Freddy, Bobbito Garcia, Nelson George, Jazzy Jay, Mos Def and Mayor Ed Koch.
