Exhibits We Love :: Kehinde Wiley, The World Stage: Israel

Kehinde Wiley’s The World Stage: Israel is exhibited at the Roberts & Tilton Gallery until May 28, 2011 in Los Angeles. Among the subjects of Mr. Wiley’s paintings are Ethiopian Jews whose families immigrated to Israel and gained citizenship between the years of 1984 and 1991. Please watch Dwayne Rodgers’ short film below to learn more about these beautiful people and project. “My reason for being here is to make beautiful paintings; to make artwork that talks about a place and about a people and about a history.” Kehinde Wiley
We are so happy to be here to see this exhibit first hand. Read our past review of this series from Brazil in 2009. – Moni Vargas

We are pleased to hear the Carmichael Gallery will be exhibiting over 20 works by Keith Haring in their upcoming Urban Legend show. We just visited their gallery this week to see the beautiful work of Nina Pandolfo (photos soon coming) and wish we could be around for this next show. If you’re in LA, make your way to Culver City and then report back to us. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Should be a great one!

The lovely curators at the Carmichael Gallery are celebrating their new space in Culver City with “Life’s Flavor,” a great solo show by Brazilian artist Nina Pandolfo. I heard of Nina from Mike Vargas who had the chance to interview Os Gemeos in Brazil a few years ago and met her during filming. Needless to say her style is detailed and beautifully whimsical while the stories her work inspire are purely magical. If you live in LA or will be there in the next month, try to catch this show. It us open to the public between March 21 – April 18th.

If you’re in LA or in the vicinity, please don’t miss Kehinde Wiley’s solo show “The World Stage: Brazil” at the Roberts & Tilton gallery. It’s a stop on Wiley’s world tour of inspiration with past residencies in Africa & China. These paintings draw you in through the deep gaze of each subject creating a personal connection with men and boys from the favelas of Brazil, a connection that would be difficult for non-locals to experience. The vibrant, tropical flowers are so lively that they leap to the foreground engaging with the subject and the viewer. They not only soften the otherwise rugged and serious tone of the men but they also give the paintings a feel of magical realism so common in the national folklore. – Moni Pineda
