Films We Love :: Rubble Kings by Shan Nicholson

New York City over the years has transformed more times than a schizophrenic tranny. From our economics, to nightlife, to art, to style, to music, to crime, to terror attacks, to a Times Square Disneyland – Damnit, we’ve seen it all. What many forget during all the makeovers and reincarnations is the roots. No matter how much paint you put on the wall, the stories underneath may be covered but not forgotten. Sorry, Giuliani.

One such story under all the paint is Rubble Kings. Director Shan Nicholson’s follow-up to his eye-popping doc on the downtown scene of the 80′s, “Downtown Calling.” This time around Nicholson sets his time machine back 10 more years and drops us off on the front stoop of gritty + grimy NYC street gangs of 1970′s. HOLY SHIT! This takes the term “that’s gangsta” to a whole other level.

Through all the madness and violence of that time, some angelic, near saintly young men take matters into their own hands and not only change the fate of NYC but also give birth to one of the most artistically prolific cultures the world has ever known. This one is a MUST SEE!!! – Jaws Truly
