Films We Love :: Madame Tutli-Putli

The first time I saw Madame Tutli-Putli, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I had a hard time believing everything in the film wasn’t actually alive. The short stop-motion film by Canadian filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski takes us on a quirky little trip on a strange but exciting night-train filled with all kinds of mysterious characters. Aside from being an awesome short film, the animation itself is some of the most amazing stop-motion I’ve ever seen on an independent production. Check it out below and prepare to be blown away!
Films We Love :: Up There

Amongst all the street art, billboards, and posters coloring the walls of New York City, Malcom Murray’s short film Up There profiles the hard working men and women who are keeping one of New York’s oldest traditions alive: hand painted advertisements. This beautifully shot twelve minute documentary tells the story of the men and women who risk their lives painting ads above our city streets. And their work is pretty amazing if you ask me. Check it out, and you’ll have a whole new look on what it takes to put up these towering murals
Artists We Love :: Henry McCausland

Even in the world of independent filmmaking, computer animation is taking over and leaving behind the traditionally hand-drawn animated film. Artist and animator Henry McCausland isn’t letting the digital age take over quite yet. McCausland’s drawings and paintings translate beautifully into his excitingly fresh take on hand-drawn animation.
Artists We Love :: Swoon

Brooklyn-based artist, Swoon brings a whole new meaning to the term “Street Art.” With her wheatpaste masterpieces spread throughout cities allover the world, it’s hard to miss the artist’s uniquely designed characters and cityscapes. Being a Brooklyn native, her art truly captures the essence of growing up in New York City. Although mainly a street artist, Swoon’s work has been showcased in some of the world’s largest contemporary museums, including MoMA’s P.S.1 and The Brooklyn Museum.
Exhibits We Love :: Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century

Known as the grandfather of street photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson truly revolutionized the art of photo journalism. From the 1930s through the end World War II, Bresson travelled the world and captured stunning in-the-moment photographs that changed the entire industry. With over 300 photographs on display, this exhibit is worth a trip to MoMA. The exhibit is running until June 28th, so be sure to check it out! -Elliot Lobell
Videos We Love :: Pedestrian Gallery

Back in 2006, when I was still in high school, I co-directed my very first documentary, Pedestrian Gallery. In the process of making the short film, we got to interview some of the coolest graffiti artists of all time: Lady Pink, Swoon, Smith, and the list goes on. Definitely one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. I figured since it highlights some really cool artists, I’d pull it out from the depths of the internet and share it with world. You can check it out here, along with some other cool short films made that same summer
