Artists We Love :: Stephan Doitschinoff aka Calma

Stephan Doitschinoff, aka Calma, recently created the artwork for the N.A.S.A music video Strange Enough, which is just incredible. Since we’ve never had the pleasure of featuring him on our site, we decided to give you a little background and share the beautiful documentary, Temporal, which captures Calma’s process while contextualizing his creations.

The Jonathan LeVine Gallery curated Calma’s first NY solo exhibit, Novo Mundo, in 2008 introducing us to his rich imagery and social commentary on institutionalized power. Please take some time to read more about the artist and see pieces from his exhibit at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. – Moni Pineda

With over 300 photographs on display, this exhibit is worth a trip to MoMA. The exhibit is running until June 28th, so be sure to check it out! -Elliot Lobell

Exhibits We Love :: Move @ Morono Kiang Gallery, LA

During our trip to Los Angeles last week I had the pleasure of meeting the artist John Carr who invited me to see his installation at the Move exhibit at the Morono Kiang Gallery. When we walked in we were warmly greeted by the exhibit’s curator Shervin Shahbazi who took the time to explain the theme of this two-part group show. This first part, Move, examines “the potential to create agency and propel change” through art in the contextual space of a home. You can catch part two of this series entitled Grow, when it debuts next month.

Exhibits We Love :: Date Farmers @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Once again, our friends at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery have a great exhibit of new works by the collaborative duo Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez, aka, the Date Farmers. If you’re not familiar with their work, check out this Current TV video from their previous exhibit at the JLG back in 2008.
The Date Farmers utilize found materials and a wide range of techniques when creating their sculptures, dioramas & paintings. This basically means that by only seeing images of their work online, you’ll probably miss great detail & enchantment. For the full effect, make sure to visit the exhibit before it closes on May 8, 2010.
