Music We Love :: Madlib Medicine Show

Music We Love :: Madlib Medicine Show

One of L.A.’s hardest working producers is working a little harder this year. Madlib’s Medicine Show is a once-a-month series of albums (that’s right, twelve albums in twelve months) that began back in January, the odd numbers being original production from Madlib, the even numbers mash-ups of some of the producer’s favorite obscure material. So far we’ve gotten everything from a Brazillian Funk mix (#2 in February) to the release of Madlib’s pre-2000 beat-tapes (#5 in May), and we’re now in the halfway-mark limbo between an excellent mix of bizarre foreign prog-rock (#6 in June) and this month’s original-production installation, High Jazz (#7). Madlib’s been on the scene since the late-90′s, crafting albums of hip-hop, jazz, R&B, Latin, and instrumentals at a staggering rate. If you’re a die-hard Madlib fan, be sure to pick up High Jazz when it drops on the 27th. If you’ve never heard of the man, the Medicine Show series is a perfect chance to get a feel for this many-talented producer’s unbeatable and incomparable style.

Music We Love :: Madlib’s Young Jazz Rebels

Music We Love :: Madlib's Young Jazz Rebels

For me one of the most exciting things about following an artist that inspires you, is watching their progression and artistry develop over time. Taking chances and being fearless is familiar territory for hip-hop / jazz phenomenon Madlib. His latest project “Madlib’s Young Jazz Rebels” is the kind of breathe of fresh air that revitalizes your state of mind and becomes the soundtrack to your life’s mission statement. If you see me with head phones on anytime in the near future, i’ll most likely be bumping this and taking a mental holiday w/ Madlib and his Yong Jazz Rebels. Go cop it!

Music We Love :: Silhouette Brown

Silhouette Brown is what happens when four great producers, songwriters & vocalists collaborate on a record and then bless us with a little tour. We’ve got Dego (4Hero, 2000Black), Kaidi Tatham (Agent K, DKD, Bugz in the Attic), Bembe Segue (MdCL, 2000Black) & Lady Alma (Sylk 130, 4Hero). With a line up like that, you’re bound to get the jazzy, soulful sound we’ve come to love along with the deep bass headnod that we can’t live without. Preview the record on the 2000Black site and make sure to check out the live shows during WMC (3.24-26) & in San Francisco (4.9), DC (4.11), New York (4.17) & Chicago (4.21).

Music Videos We Love :: Soil & Pimp Sessions, Pop Korn

I caught Soil & Pimp’s NY debut a few years ago and they absolutely blew me away. It was a jazz show for our generation – vibrant, full of energy executed by highly skilled & talented mad men who commanded their instruments, the stage & all of us in the crowd. Soon it was termed “Death Jazz” which is a fitting description as the frenzy of their show is closer to a death metal gig than a languid, jazz joint.
