Exhibits We Love :: Art in the Streets pt2

Our photos from MOCA’s Art in the Streets continue with a few of our favorites, beginning with Mister Cartoon. His sexy ice cream truck installation captures a slice of the LA cholo scene in beautiful detail. Also on the LA tip, there’s a couple of protest posters by Robbie Conal: Contra Cocaine, dealing with the Iran-Contra-Crack epidemic from 1987 and Little White Lies featuring right-wing fundamentalist Jesse Helms.
On a lighter note, we had a good laugh with NeckFace’s installation & “performance” piece as a dirty bum, which may have been a preview treat. We also enjoyed the two Malcolm Mclaren memorabilia cases, the Lee Quinones tribute wall and Mode 2′s celebratory mural. Don’t miss Martha Cooper’s photography room featuring a wall of artists including one of our faves, Doze Green and look our upcoming FWL Axis profile with her. We included a few other pics for those who won’t be able to make it to the show : ) – Moni Vargas

Exhibits We Love :: Art in the Streets

We had the pleasure of going to the MOCA preview of Art in the Streets and although a few of our favorite artists were not included, we couldn’t help but be infinitely inspired by the mere scope of the show, the well deserved recognition of the movement and the incredible works and worlds assembled. We took a few photos for those of you who won’t be in LA in the next months to see it. For those of you who are going, don’t miss Rammallzee’s room, Os Gemeos, the amazing time line, Martha Cooper’s room, Mister Cartoon, Swoon, Roa, Chalfant & the sweet Invader pieces.

In the meantime, take a look at our short doc profiles with Invader and Kenny Scharf.

Books We Love :: Trespass. A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art

Books We Love :: Trespass. A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art

When we first heard that Marc & Sara Schiller of Wooster Collective were curating a book on urban art for Taschen, we new it would be comprehensive but we never imagined it would connect four generations of works from around the world. This collaborative effort with author, Carlo McCormick, and editor, Ethel Seno, “examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city’s social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance.” The 320 pages include major works by the contemporary stars of the street art scene as well as unpublished works and photographs by the likes of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Martha Cooper. We LOVE the ‘leaf through’ feature giving us a sneak peak.

Tonight, enjoy a Trespass book signing at the Taschen shop in Beverly Hills. Please visit their event page to rsvp. – Moni Pineda

Exhibits We Love :: Keith Haring - Urban Legend @ Carmichael Gallery LA

We are pleased to hear the Carmichael Gallery will be exhibiting over 20 works by Keith Haring in their upcoming Urban Legend show. We just visited their gallery this week to see the beautiful work of Nina Pandolfo (photos soon coming) and wish we could be around for this next show. If you’re in LA, make your way to Culver City and then report back to us. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Should be a great one!

Artists We Love :: Richard Hambleton

Artists We Love :: Richard Hambleton

Any kid who grew up in and around NYC during the late 70′s and early 80′s has to remember all those eerie black images of sandblasted shadow men all around Manhattan. Long before I even knew what the hell “art” was, I remember these images leaving an indelible mark on my imagination. Back in the day when I used to ride in my Dad’s taxi, he would point them out and tell me stories that the “Shadow Men” were images of what our bodies would look like if an atomic bomb were to go off. Implying that all that’d be left of us would be these ashed out black images all over the streets of Manhattan – YIKES!
