Music We Love :: Madlib Medicine Show
One of L.A.’s hardest working producers is working a little harder this year. Madlib’s Medicine Show is a once-a-month series of albums (that’s right, twelve albums in twelve months) that began back in January, the odd numbers being original production from Madlib, the even numbers mash-ups of some of the producer’s favorite obscure material. So far we’ve gotten everything from a Brazillian Funk mix (#2 in February) to the release of Madlib’s pre-2000 beat-tapes (#5 in May), and we’re now in the halfway-mark limbo between an excellent mix of bizarre foreign prog-rock (#6 in June) and this month’s original-production installation, High Jazz (#7). Madlib’s been on the scene since the late-90′s, crafting albums of hip-hop, jazz, R&B, Latin, and instrumentals at a staggering rate. If you’re a die-hard Madlib fan, be sure to pick up High Jazz when it drops on the 27th. If you’ve never heard of the man, the Medicine Show series is a perfect chance to get a feel for this many-talented producer’s unbeatable and incomparable style.

Silhouette Brown is what happens when four great producers, songwriters & vocalists collaborate on a record and then bless us with a little tour. We’ve got Dego (4Hero, 2000Black), Kaidi Tatham (Agent K, DKD, Bugz in the Attic), Bembe Segue (MdCL, 2000Black) & Lady Alma (Sylk 130, 4Hero). With a line up like that, you’re bound to get the jazzy, soulful sound we’ve come to love along with the deep bass headnod that we can’t live without. Two of my favorite producers, Orin Walters & Phil Asher, are killing it with their new collaboration, Black & Spanish. If you don’t know these two masterminds by name, you’ll definitely know Orin’s work in Bugz in the Attic & Phil’s Restless Soul. Their new track No Compromise has the Latin house beat that’s making my hips shake right now, a rebellious sample from one of my favorite films, Network, and an unstoppable groove that will have hands up in the air and baby powder on the floor. Big up!!
